Novel linkage of health and prison data in Scotland: Investigating access to services for mental health and substance use following release from prison

ObjectivesTo compare the use of NHS services for mental health and substance (MH/SU) between people released from prison general population. This paper describes data linkage analytical process, discusses policy implications highlights methodological contributions future administrative research in public justice.
 MethodsRetrospective cohort study using linked Scottish Prison Service (SPS), involving all individuals 2015 (n = 14,000), a random population sample 70,000), matched on index date, age, sex, postcode.
